Runtuna Kyrka, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Runtuna Kyrka is the church of the former Runtuna Parish. It is a few kilometers to the northwest of the village with the same name. This area is a part of the countryside of the historical province of Södermanland in eastern Sweden. Today both Runtuna and the church are a part of Nyköping Municipality in Södermanland County.


A Short History of Runtuna Kyrka

Runtuna Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages. The church that has been the center of the parish was built in the 12th century. The parish survived until the municipal reform of 1862 when it was split between the local government of Runtuna Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality was 1952 incorporated into Rönö Municipality, which in 1971 became a part of Nyköping Municipality.


Things to Do and See

Farmland, fields and small forests are surrounding the area around Runtuna Kyrka. This is after all the countryside of Södermanland and there are plenty of small countryside roads to explore on a bike or on foot.

Runtuna Church

Runtuna Church dates back to the 12th century and is both the most prominent as well as the most historic building in the area. The church is believed to have had a clock tower, that likely tumbled in the 16th century. Runtuna Church is today a part of Rönö Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.

The Runestones

Four stones stand along the enclosure wall of the church. At least three of these are runestones. Two of these are Sö 143 and Sö 149. The first mentions Öjar who had the stone made in memory of his son Ingulv and the second mentions Anund and Gylla who made that stone in memory of their son Gunnar.

  • Flights: The closest airport is Stockholm Skavsta Airport (NYO), which is only 20 kilometers away.
  • Car: Runtuna is along countryside roads a bit north of Nyköping.
  • Bus: Bus 667 from Sörmlandstrafiken stops at Runtuna Kyrka on its route between Nyköping and Segerstad.
  • Train: There is no train station here. Instead, the closest train station is in nearby Nyköping.
