Högby, Öland – Exploring Sweden

Högby is a small settlement around the former parish church in the northern parts of Öland, the second largest island in Sweden. The settlement has today grown together with the nearby expanding locality of Löttorp.

A Short History

Högby Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages and the first known church here was most likely built during the 12th century. The parish was 1862 split between the church, Högby Congregation, and the civil administration of Högby Municipality. The municipality has since merged with other municipalities, and since 1974, the area forms a part of Borgholm Municipality. The church is since 2010 a part of Nordölands Congregation.

The settlement lost its status as a center for the local area when the railway in 1906 was completed and the nearby settlement of Löttorp started to develop into a small commercial center. The settlement around the church has since for the most part grown together with the expanding Löttorp. In total the whole Högby District, with the borders of the former parish, has today around 1000 inhabitants. These figures include the population in the nearby locality of Löttorp.

Things to Do and See

Högby is small, but there are still a few historical buildings to explore. This is also the countryside, meaning easy access to fields and small forests. Not to mention that the Baltic Sea is never really far away on an island as narrow as Öland.

Högby Church

The church was inaugurated in 1871. It replaced an older church which is believed to have dated back to the 12th century. From the old church, only the church tower survived. The church is today one of several churches being a part of Nordölands Congregation, a part of the Lutheran Church of Sweden.

Högby Stenkvarn

There is a large stone windmill a few hundred meters from the church. It is built in limestone and has a height of 14 meters. The lower walls are 1.7 meters thick. It is one of the most prominent buildings along the main road and dates back to the mid-19th century. The windmill has not been in production since the 1920s.

Högby Idrottsplats

Högby Idrottsplats is the local sports center. It consists of three football fields and other areas for athletics. This is the home of the sports club Högby IF. The club is active in many sports including football, athletics, floorball, and badminton. None of the teams does, however, compete in any high-tier league in the country.
