Tsambika, Rhodes, Exploring Greece

Tsambika, Rhodes – Exploring Greece

Tsambika is a beach and monastery along the eastern coast of Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese islands of Greece. This is a popular tourist destination that is split into two parts. The first is a long sandy beach and the second is a challenging climb to the hilltop monastery. The magnificent coastal view is worth the climb and a visit to the beach afterward is a way to cool down in the water of the Aegean Sea.

Our Visit to Tsambika

We visited Tsambika in 2019 while staying a week on the island of Rhodes. Our visit included both the beach as well as the climb to the monastery to enjoy the view.

Things to Do and See

Climb the hill or swim, that is the question. Tsambika can offer two quite different experiences within just a short distance of each other. Sun lovers might, however, enjoy both options.

Tsambika Monastery

Tsambika Monastery lies along an access road just north of the beach. After parking at the designated area, you will still have 292 steps to climb before reaching the top. At the top you will find a small church, but also a magnificent view. From here you can see the surrounding hills, the beach below, and far out across the Aegean Sea. To the northeast lies Turkey, somewhere to the east lies the island of Cyprus, and to the south is Egypt and Africa. Neither will be visible, but it is that feeling when you watch out across the open sea.

Tsambika Beach

Looking for a beach on the island of Rhodes? Tsambika Beach might be what you are looking for. This is a very scenic location with many of the amenities that you might need for a day on the beach. Here you have a restaurant and a bar, as well as many sunbeds available for a fee. Well, it is a popular spot and can get crowded. The surrounding mountains do, however, create some kind of peaceful atmosphere in the area.

How to Get to Tsambika

  • Flights: Rhodes International Airport (RHO) lies in the northern part of the island. This is a busy airport, especially during the tourist season, and connects the island with the rest of Europe.
  • Car: Tsambika is near Road 95, which follows the eastern coast of Rhodes. Just to the north is the village of Kolympia.
