Ryd, Småland – Exploring Sweden

Ryd is a locality in Tingsryd Municipality in Kronoberg County. This was once the central settlement of Almundsryd Parish on lands that are part of the historical province of Småland in southeastern Sweden. This small locality is home to around 1,400 inhabitants, a number that has been mostly stable for the last 20 years.

A Short History of Ryd

Almundsryd Parish has a history stretching back to around the year 1400. The parish had originally a wooden church, but it was replaced by the current stone church in 1832. The parish acted as the local government until 1862 when its responsibilities were split between the church congregation and the new civic government of Almundsryd Municipality. The name changed from Almundsryd to Ryd in 1967 before the municipality was incorporated into Tingsryd Municipality in 1971.

The small settlement that had developed in the vicinity of the church during the last centuries did in 1874 see a major change. This was when the railway between Karlshamn and Vislanda opened. However, the railway was decommissioned in 1970 and the final rails were removed in 1982.

Things to Do and See in Ryd

This is an area that might be best known for the large car graveyard at Kyrkö Mosse, just a short distance to the west. Ryd itself is a small locality with a restaurant and the grocery store ICA Nära in the center. It is, however, possible to see that this is a center that once had a lot more activity.

Almundsryds Kyrka

Almundsryd Church is a white stone church dating back to 1832. It replaced the former wooden medieval church as the seat of Almundsryd Parish. The church is today a part of the Almundsryd Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.

Ryds Hembygdspark

The local heritage society was founded in 1935 and has its home at the local heritage park Ryds Hembygdspark. The park is a small open-air museum with three buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

Lake Hönshyltefjorden

Lake Hönshyltefjorden lies to the north and to the east of the locality. We have not found any beach or swimming spots around the lake, but it is known for its fishing. There are fish such as European perch, northern pike, zander, and common roach. A fishing permit is required. There is also an around 13-kilometer-long cycling route around the lake.
