Lundby, Västmanland – Exploring Sweden

Lundby is a small settlement on the outskirts of the city of Västerås. It is today part of Västerås Municipality in Västmanland County but was once together with its church the seat of its own parish. This is a rural area next to the sixth-largest city in Sweden.

A Short History of Lundby

Lundby Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages and its church was built already in the 12th century. The parish acted as the local government until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when its responsibilities were split between the new civic government of Lundby Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality was in 1918 incorporated into the town of Västerås, which in turn became Västerås Municipality in 1971. The church congregation is since 1962 known as Västerås Lundby Congregation.

Things to Do and See

When looking out across the nearby fields it is hard to believe that the city of Västerås is close by. The church watches out over these fields and is the main attraction to this small settlement. There is, however, also a football field as well as the home to the local heritage society.

Lundby Church

The former parish church was built in the 12th century. It is a white stone church that received its current appearance at the end of the 19th century. The tower did once have a height of 40 meters but is today much lower. The church is today part of the Västerås Lundby Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.
