Tingsryd, Småland – Exploring Sweden

Tingsryd is a locality and seat of the local municipality in Kronoberg County. It lies in the historical province of Småland in southeastern Sweden. At its feet is Lake Tiken, which is just a short walk from the main street Storgatan. At its center lies the low-cost shopping center known as Börjes, a place that is hard to not see when walking along Storgatan. In its vicinity, there are around 3,200 people who have Tingsryd as their home.

A Short History of Tingsryd

Tingsryd has a history stretching back to the 16th century. It was during the 16th and 17th centuries that small industries were established along the river Bräkneån. It would, however, take until the end of the 19th century before the development of the settlement sped up. This was when the railway arrived in the area, first with the Bredåkra-Tingsryd Railway in 1896 and then Växjö-Tingsryd Railway in 1897. It was in the vicinity of the railway station that the settlement grew and expanded. The railway station still stands there today, but there have been no passengers here since 1965 and the station has been without any rails since 1969.

Things to Do and See

This is a small place, with a small-town feeling. There is plenty of nature in its vicinity, with lakes, forests, and fields. For the ones looking to explore the center, there is a lot to see. Walk along the central streets and you will find a few small shops and restaurants. Then there is, of course, the large shopping center of Börjes.

Kungastenarna

At a resting area along the road at the eastern outskirts of Tingsryd stands Kungastenarna. These are three raised stones in memory of royals who have visited the town. The first was Crown Prince Oscar, later King Oscar I, who visited Tingsryd in 1827. He was followed by King Gustaf VI Adolf in 1954 and King Carl XVI Gustaf in 1975.

Börjes

Börjes is the local low-cost shopping center. It was opened in 1944 and has since expanded within the town center. It is hard to not notice their presence when visiting Tingsryd. Some visitors might enjoy it, some might still consider that the prices don’t meet the set expectations, and others will see this as a nightmare.

Tingsås Kyrka

The current church was built in 1853 and stands near the center of Tingsryd. It has two wooden predecessors, the first one dating back to 1590. The church is today a part of the Tingsås Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.

Lake Tiken

Lake Tiken is never far away but it is still hard to reach due to the road that separates it from the town center. At its northern shores there is, however, the beach and swimming spot of Mårslyckesand. It is located right next to the local camping ground for caravans and motor homes.

Tingsryds AIF & Dackehallen

Tingsryd AIF is a local sports club with the most success in ice hockey. The ice hockey team is currently playing in Hockeyallsvenskan, the second-tier league of Sweden. They have played seven seasons in the top league of Sweden, the first time after being promoted in 1967. The last season the team played in the top-tier league was 1974/75. The closest the team has been to reaching SHL, the top-tier league, was in 2016 when the team ended in the second spot in the league but lost both of the given opportunities to reach the qualification series.

Tingsryd AIF plays their home games in the arena Dackehallen. The arena was completed in 1969 and has room for 3,650 spectators, making it the 29th largest ice hockey arena in Sweden. It has for a shorter time been known as the Nelson Garden Arena.
