Primate’s Palace – Sights in Bratislava

The old town in Bratislava might be quite small, but it does have a lot of old and beautiful historical buildings. The Primate’s Palace, or Primaciálny palác as it is in Slovak, is just one of these. This palace is, however, probably one of the more prominent buildings in the Old Town of Bratislava. Even though it is hidden behind the Old Town Hall it is very impressive indeed. This is today the seat of the mayor of Bratislava, but that is just one small part of the building’s history.

Primate’s Palace: A Bit of Slovak History

The Old Town in Bratislava is small in size, but very charming. Imagine pastel colored buildings and narrow streets. Add to that impressive palaces and churches. The Primate’s Palace was built at the end of the 18th century for the Archbishop at the time. It is neoclassical in style and it is especially the Hall of Mirrors that makes this palace special. A piece of history was written here. It was in the Hall of Mirrors that the Peace of Pressburg was signed in 1805. Back in the day Bratislava went by the name Pressburg and it was a part of Hungary. This treaty saw the end of Austria’s involvement in the War of the Third Coalition and Napoleon’s allies made large territorial gains. This was also the final end of the Holy Roman Empire,

Primate’s Palace: How Do You Find It?

The palace is located in the center of the Old Town in Bratislava. However, you might miss it if you’re not careful. It overlooks the square Primaciálne námestie, which is directly behind the Old Town Hall, next to the main square, Hlavné námestie.
