Timmernabben, Småland – Exploring Sweden

Timmernabben is a coastal locality in Mönsterås Municipality in Kalmar County. This is Småland’s Baltic Sea coast with the island of Öland right across the strait. Shipping of timber and the local shipyard has historically been providing important employment opportunities in the area. It has, however, more recently become a coastal resort with a year-round population of around 1,400 inhabitants.

A Short History of Timmernabben

What is today the locality of Timmernabben was in fact during the Middle Ages two smaller settlements. These were Nyemåla in the north and Gissemåla in the south. Two shipping harbors were established near these two settlements in the 17th and 18th centuries. These were Tillingenabben and Timmernabben. They were both used for the shipping of the local timber.

The 19th century brought with it not only increased timber trade but also the establishment of shipyards along the coast. For some time there was a total of three shipyards here, as well as a few other smaller industries. One of these other companies was the ceramic manufacturer that today is known as Gabriel Kakelugnar AB.

Things to Do and See

Timmernabben has as its main attraction its long shore towards the Baltic Sea. Here you can find beautiful paths along the coast, well-fitted for hiking or just an evening stroll. Along the coast is also a small marina and a beach.
