Sorunda, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Sorunda is a locality in Nynäshamn Municipality in Stockholm County. It shares its name with the former parish that once covered these lands and houses the former parish church. In addition to the settlement around the church, it also covers the former settlements of Sunnerby and Spångbro. It has a population of around 1300 inhabitants.

A Short History of Sorunda

Sorunda Parish had its origins in the Middle Ages and it lies in the historical province of Södermanland. Its church was inaugurated already in the 12th century and has been the center of the parish since then. The parish was the local government until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when the parish’s responsibilities were split between the civic government of Sorunda Municipality and the church congregation. In 1974, the municipality was incorporated into Nynäshamn Municipality.

Things to Do and See

Sorunda is on a large peninsula along the Swedish east coast. The bay Himmerfjärden is a short distance to the west and the rest of the Baltic Sea is not far away either. Otherwise, this is an area of farmlands and small forests with the parish church and residential areas at its center.

Sorunda Church

The old parish church is without doubt the most prominent building around here. It is a white stone church that is considered to be one of the largest rural churches in Södermanland. The church is today part of Sorunda Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.
