Stadshusbacken – Sights on Åland

Stadshusbacken is the slope in Mariehamn that leads up to the town hall. This is a park landscape leading up to the entrance of the town hall, with statues, fountains, and plenty of plants. A statue of the Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna was raised here in 2011 to celebrate the 150 years since the founding of Mariehamn. It is from this Russian Empress that Mariehamn got its name and the statue was a gift from the city of Saint Petersburg. The park is one of many green spaces in the town and it’s a nice place for a picnic.

Find Your Way to Stadshusbacken

Stadshusbacken is located in the center of Mariehamn, right between the main square and the town hall. If you find “Torget” or “Stadshuset” on a map, then you will be able to find your way fairly easily. It is located within walking distance from most parts of Mariehamn, but is a bit closer to the marinas of the eastern harbor compared to the ferry terminals of the western harbor.
