Örtomta, Östergötland – Exploring Sweden

Örtomta is a small settlement in the historical province of Östergötland in eastern Sweden. It has a population of around 100 inhabitants and is today a part of Linköping Municipality. Once upon a time, this was the center for the local parish, with the settlement growing around the parish church.


A Short History of Örtomta

Örtomta Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages. The local church dates back to the 12th century but has seen several reconstructions since. Especially during the 19th century which even resulted in a new inauguration of the church.

The parish was 1862 split between the local government of Örtomta Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality was 1952 incorporated into Askeby Municipality, which in 1961 was further incorporated into Åkerbo Municipality. Eventually, in 1971, the area became a part of Linköping Municipality.


Things to Do and See

Welcome to the Swedish countryside where farmland surrounds small villages like Örtomta. That is at least common in Östergötland and especially across the plains surrounding the city of Linköping. In fact, Linköping is nearby. This village has one prominent building which is the local church. Other than that there is a small school and the rest are mainly single-family homes.

Örtomta Church

The oldest parts of the church date back to the 12th century. The building once had a church tower, but it was demolished in 1830. The church is today a part of the Åkerbo Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.
