Tillbergaby, Västmanland – Exploring Sweden
Tillbergaby, or Tillberga Kyrkby, is the church village of the former Tillberga Parish. It is in Västerås Municipality in Västmanland County, just a short distance from the locality of Tillberga, which developed around the nearby railway station. The locality is actually in the neighboring parish of Hubbo.
A Short History of Tillbergaby
Tillberga Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages. The current church in the center of the parish dates to 1622. It replaced the former medieval church that had been destroyed in a fire. The fire also destroyed large parts of Tillbergaby. The parish was in operation up until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when its responsibilities were split between the civic government of Tillinge Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality was in 1967 incorporated into the town of Västerås, which since 1971 is known as Västerås Municipality. The Tillberga Congregation has since its establishment incorporated the churches of Hubbo, Sevalla, and Tortuna.
Things to Do and See
Tillbergaby is in the middle of farmland and a small forest. At its center stands the white stone church watching out over the fields. This is in many ways the main attraction here, but this is a large area rich with sights. More churches, but also other ancient remains and towns such as Västerås.
Tillberga Church
Tillberga Church was inaugurated in 1622. This white stone church replaced the former medieval parish church that had been burned down. The church is today one of the churches making up Tillberga Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.
