Jämsunda, Blekinge – Exploring Sweden

Jämsunda, or Jämsunda by, is a small settlement to the southwest of Tving, in the province of Blekinge in Southern Sweden. The settlement has around 30 adult inhabitants and is in a countryside setting with farms and farmland in its vicinity.

Several of my ancestors have called Jämsunda their home, these include Gustaf Svensson Åra (1806-1873), Elsa Maria Svensdotter (1796-1856), and Karl Johan Gustafsson (1837-1914). Who knows, maybe there are still a few of their descendants living here today.

A Short History of Jämsunda

Jämsunda was mentioned already in the first known household examination records for Tving Parish at the end of the 18th century. The settlement also appeared already in the mid-17th century in the population census of the time. Jämsunda had already in the mid-17th century 17 households of different sizes and even though the area has developed since it is still a small community surrounded by farmland.

Things to Do and See

It is not prominent buildings or large natural features that you are looking for when heading to the countryside of Blekinge. Here you will find fields and forests to enjoy the sight of. The main road might not be the best to explore on foot or on a bike, but there are still smaller roads that are better suited for this kind of exploring. Maybe a few of the historical houses are still standing. The area has historically had several crofts and farmsteads, maybe some of these are still there today.
