Löttorp, Öland – Exploring Sweden

Löttorp is a locality in the northern part of Öland, the second largest island in Sweden. It is one of the commercial centers of the island and the one that covers the needs of its northern part. This was originally a settlement that developed around the railway but has now around 570 inhabitants and no longer any railway.

A Short History of Löttorp

Löttorp was for centuries only a few farmsteads within the Högby Parish. It wasn’t until the arrival of the railway in the 20th century that the settlement started to develop into the commercial center for the northern part of Öland. It was in 1906 that the railway opened and the year is still considered the birth year of modern Löttorp. With the railway came new industries such as a dairy factory in 1912. Löttorp was connected to the electrical grid in 1925 and the following decades saw the opening of a fire station, school, post office, and a lot more.

The railway was originally covering the distance of 55 kilometers between Borgholm and Böda. It was later merged with the railway on the southern half of the island and covered a distance of 151 kilometers. It was in operation until 1961 and was never connected with the network on the mainland.

Things to Do and See
