Kattnäs, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Kattnäs is the settlement that has developed in the vicinity of the old parish church. It is located at the shores of Lake Klämmingen, a short distance north of Gnesta. This is the countryside of the province of Södermanland in eastern Sweden.


A Short History of Kattnäs

Kattnäs Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages and its church was built in the 12th century. The parish existed up until the Swedish municipal reform of 1862 when it was split between the local government of Kattnäs Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality was 1952 incorporated into Gnesta Municipality. Gnesta Municipality was later between the years 1974 and 1992 a part of Nyköping Municipality before being restored. The church congregation is since 1992 a part of Frustuna Congregation.


Things to Do and See

With the exception of the church, which is the main construction in the area, it is Läke Klämmingen that probably attracts the most visitors to the area.

Kattnäs Church

Kattnäs Church dates back to the 12th century and is the most prominent and the most historic building in the area. Its clock tower was added at the end of the 13th century and a few more additions and changes have been performed on the building in the centuries since. The church is today a part of Frustuna Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.

Klämmingsbergsbadet

Klämmingsbergsbadet is one of the public beaches in Gnesta Municipality and a popular location for swimming during the summer. It is adjoined by a small camping and has a café specializing in ice cream.


How to Get to Kattnäs

  • Flights: The closest airport is Stockholm Skavsta Airport, located only 56 kilometers to the south. From here there are a few international flights to other cities in Europe. To Sweden’s main international airport, Stockholm Arlanda Airport, the distance is 110 kilometers.
  • Car: Kattnäs is located along countryside roads a bit north of Gnesta.
  • Bus: Bus 543 from Sörmlandstrafiken stops nearby the church on its route between Gnesta and Läggesta.
  • Train: There is no train station here. Instead, the closest train station can be found in nearby Gnesta.
