Torslunda, Öland – Exploring Sweden

Torslunda is a settlement in Mörbylånga Municipality on the island of Öland, the second largest island in Sweden. This mostly rural community was together with its church once the seat of the local parish. The parish included the localities of Färjestaden, Skogsby, and Arontorp and would today have been the most populated parish on the island. The settlement of Torslunda is in itself today a part of the locality known as Skogsby.

A Short History of Torslunda

Torslunda Parish had its origins in the Middle Ages and its first church is believed to have been built in the 12th century. That original church was replaced by the current church in the 18th century. The new church remained the center of social and religious life in the parish for many years after its completion. Its position as the seat of the parish lasted until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when the responsibilities of the parish was split between the church congregation and the new civic government of Torslunda Municipality. The municipality became a part of Mörbylånga Municipality in 1974.

Things to Do and See

Torslunda is the northern part of Skogsby and here you will mainly find the church and its nearby clergy house. The built-up area follows the main road and you don’t have to go far away from the road before you find yourself in the surrounding farmland. If you continue a bit further inland, you will also reach some of the island’s small forests.

Torslunda Church

The church was completed in 1776 and replaced the former medieval church that once stood here. The tower, however, dates to 1819. This white stone church is today a part of the Torslunda Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.
