Hökerum, Västergötland – Exploring Sweden

Hökerum is a locality in Ulricehamn Municipality in Västra Götaland County. This was once the seat of Södra Ving Parish within the former Älvsborg County. Today it is home to around 650 inhabitants with Lake Mogden just to the northeast. Historically, the area has been dependent on agriculture and forestry.

A Short History of Hökerum

Ving Parish had its origins in the Middle Ages and its medieval church was inaugurated in the 1130s. The name was changed to Södra Ving in 1886, a few decades after the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862 when the parish’s responsibilities were split between the church Congregation and the new civic government of Ving Municipality. Hökerum Municipality was established in 1952 by merging the ten smaller rural municipalities of Fänneslunda, Grovare, Hällstad, Härna, Kärråkra, Murum, Möne, Södra Ving, Södra Vånga, and Varnum. The new municipality received its name from the locality of Hökerum where Södra Ving’s church is located. The new municipality was in operation for two decades before it in 1973 became a part of Ulricehamn Municipality.

Things to Do and See

The old medieval church still stands at the center of Hökerum and is its most prominent building. It is joined by the local school that can be found on the other side of the road. Most of Hökerum is otherwise made up of residential areas with a few smaller industrial sites at its outskirts.

Södra Ving Church

The church still stands today but has seen several renovations and alterations since its original construction. It is today a part of the Södra Ving Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.
