Hammarland Church – Sights on Åland

Hammarland Church, also known as Saint Catherine’s Church, can be found in the village of Kattby on the Åland Islands. The village is the seat of the Hammarland Municipality and is in addition to the church also home to many of the services of the municipality.


Hammarland Church

Hammarland Church dates back to the 13th century with the tower being added in the early 14th century. This medieval stone church is dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria, a woman who was born in the 3rd century Roman Empire. The church has experienced several fires over the centuries. The most recent was in 2010 when the church suffered minor damages after an attack by two teenage girls that is said to have had a satanic motive. Hammarland Church is today a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland.


Find Your Way

The church lies along Road 1, between Mariehamn and Eckerö. When driving west from Mariehamn the church will be on your right. You will find it just before reaching Kattby, the central village of Hammarland. The distance from Mariehamn is about 20 kilometers.
