Anundshög, Västmanland – Exploring Sweden

Anundshög is considered to be the largest burial mound in Sweden with a height of 9 meters and a diameter of up to 68 meters. This is an area with several remains from the past, including stone circles, stone ships, and even a runestone. It is on the outskirts of the city of Västerås within the area of the historical province of Västmanland. The site is estimated to date back to some time between the Migration Period and the Viking Age in Sweden.


Things to Do and See

There are many ancient remains to explore here. The main attraction is the huge burial mound Anundshög, but there is more to see. There is a total of 12 burial mounds, 10 stone circles, 5 stone ships, 14 additional raised stones, and one runestone.

The runestone tells of Folkvid, who is said to have raised all the stones in memory of his son Heden, the brother of Anund. The stone itself is over three meters high and has a unique appearance.

The largest stone ship has a length of 53 meters and a maximum width of 16 meters. Remember, this is just one of several large stone formations. There are also additional ancient remains in the surrounding region.


How to Get to Anundshög

  • Flights: The nearest airport is Stockholm Västerås Airport (VST) 5 kilometers to the south. Sweden’s largest airport, Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), is to be 92 kilometers to the east.
  • Car: Anundshög is in the eastern part of Västerås.
  • Bus: Buses from VL connect Anundshög with the surrounding area.
  • Train: The closest train station is in Västerås.
