Tuna, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

In the province of Södermanland in eastern Sweden, just a short distance to the west of the town of Nyköping is the small settlement of Tuna. This is a settlement that has grown up around the local church and it was once the center of the local parish. Today the church and the few local inhabitants are a part of Nyköping Municipality in Södermanland County.

A Short History of Tuna

The settlement and its church once stood at the center of Tuna Parish. The parish had its origins in the Middle Ages and its church dates back to the 13th century. The parish survived up until the Swedish municipal reform of 1862 when it was split between the local government of Tuna Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality was 1952 incorporated into Jönåker Municipality, which in turn became a part of Nyköping Municipality in 1971. Tuna Congregation is since the year 2006 a part of Kiladalen Congregation.

Things to Do and See

Tuna might not attract many, but the few who do visit do get a glimpse of the Swedish countryside with farmlands and small forests. Then there is, of course, the traditional stone church.

Tuna Church

Tuna Church is the most prominent building in the area and probably what attracts the most people to events such as baptisms, weddings, burials, and to visit the graveyard. It was built during the 13th century and has as most churches seen several changes since. The clock tower was added as late as 1877. The church is today a part of Kiladalen Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.
