Now that November is here, it’s time to look at the reading list from August to October. We have been so busy this fall, so I haven’t really had time to read. Well, traveling is fun too, so I’m not complaining. As you might remember, I embarked upon a journey at the beginning of this year. My goal was to read 52 books. This far, I’ve read 62 books. I guess it’s time to think about next year’s challenge. Perhaps 2018 will be more about quality than quantity. Do you plan your reading in advance or do you just randomly pick any book that sounds good?
Let’s talk more about the stories that caught my attention from August to October, shall we?
The Books I Read from August to October 2017
During this period, I read a total of seven books. Three of them were in English, and four in Swedish. It was a nice mix of prize-winning literature, chick lit, and detective stories.
August
- 🇸🇪 Vattenänglar (Water Angels) by Swedish author Mons Kallentoft. A fairly entertaining Scandinavian crime story. I like the way Kallentoft writes, but I cannot say that I remember the plot.
- 🇸🇪 De polyglotta älskarna (The Polyglot Lovers) won the prestigious August Prize in 2016. The writer is Lina Wolff. I love the title, and the novel was good too.
- 🇬🇧 Purity by Jonathan Franzen was a fairly interesting novel. It took some time to get into the story and it did not always feel so convincing. It took me ages to read it because it’s so thick.
- 🇸🇪 Den sista safarin (original title in Afrikaans Onsigbaar, English title: Blood Safari). This thriller by Deon Meyer might be the first South African book I’ve ever read. Fast-paced and entertaining, I enjoyed reading this story in the evenings during our trip to France.
September
- 🇬🇧 The One We Fell in Love With is one of those novels that you read, enjoy for a while, and then forget. In other words, good chick lit. I bought this book by Paige Toon when we visited Saarbrücken in Germany. That’s all I remember about it.
October
- 🇸🇪 Döden på Nilen (Death on the Nile). I really like Agatha Christie – her stories really takes the reader to another time and to another world. This book awoke my interest in Egypt and the Nile.
- 🇬🇧 Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. This is a story that haunts me still. It’s dark, beautiful, and hopeless. I actually think that they for once awarded the Nobel Prize in literature to a good candidate.
August to October in My Bullet Journal
I do keep a reading list in my pretty yellow bullet journal. Sometimes in the future, it’ll be fun to look back at the books I read during this period in my life. The list is very simple, I just put down the title and the language under the right month. Next year I might write a list of novels and other works that I should read. I still think there should be more non-fiction there.
And here’s the pile of the books I still should read/complete this year. Well, apart from the one by Agatha Christie.
