Lid, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Lid is a small settlement around the local church. It is in the countryside of the province of Södermanland in eastern Sweden. This was once the center of the local parish but is nowadays a part of Nyköping Municipality.


A Short History of Lid

Lid Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages. The church was built here sometime during the 12th or 13th century.

The settlement around the church remained the center of the parish up until the Swedish municipal reform of 1862 when the parish was split between the local government of Lid Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality was 1952 incorporated into Rönö Municipality and then in 1971, the area became a part of Nyköping Municipality. The congregation was in 2002 incorporated into Rönö Congregation.


Things to Do and See

This is the countryside of Södermanland and the small roads along fields, farmland, and forests are by themself perfect for hiking, cycling or to be explored from the comfort of a car.

Lid Church

Lid Church dates back to the 12th or 13th century and is a white stone church with an adjacent clock tower. The clock tower was built in 1749. The was once the center of the local parish but is today a part of Rönö Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.

The Two Runestones

There are two runestones at Lid Church, Sö 128 and Sö 129. The latter is actually a part of the church wall. Number 128 is believed to be from the 11th century and was raised by Torun and Stenborg in memory of their mother Stenfrid. Number 129 tells of Björn who raised the stone in memory of his brother Helge.


How to Get to Lid

  • Flights: The closest airport is Stockholm Skavsta Airport (NYO), only 23 kilometers away.
  • Car: Lid is on countryside roads a bit north of Nyköping.
  • Bus: Bus 667 from Sörmlandstrafiken stops in Runtuna on its route between Nyköping and Segerstad.
  • Train: There is no train station here. Instead, the closest train station isin nearby Nyköping.
