Sundby, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Sundby is a small settlement in Eskilstuna Municipality in the province of Södermanland. It was once, together with its church, the seat of the local parish. Today it is a church just to the southeast of the locality of Sundbyholm.

A Short History of Sundby

Sundby Parish had its origins in the Middle Ages and its church was built in the 12th century. The parish acted as the local government for centuries with the church as its seat. This was the case until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. At that time the responsibilities were instead split between the new civic government and the church congregation. In 1952, the municipality was incorporated into Kalfjärden Municipality, which in turn became a part of Eskilstuna Municipality in 1971. The church congregation is since 1995 a part of the Kalfjärden Congregation.

Things to Do and See

There is a lot to explore in this part of Södermanland. There are many rural churches and the shores of Lake Mälaren are never far away. Here just south of Sundbyholm, there are fields and small forests. Just to the north is also the well-known rock carving known as Sigurdsristningen.

Sundby Church

The medieval parish church dates to the 12th century. The original parts of the church only make up a small portion of the current church standing here. There have over the centuries been many reconstructions and alterations. The church is today a part of the Kalfjärden Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.
