Hölö Kyrka, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

A Short History of Hölö Kyrka

Hölö Parish was established in 1570 when the two medieval parishes of Ytterhölö and Överhölö were merged. The parish church was built in the 12th century and it originally belonged to Ytterhölö Parish. Not much is left of the medieval church, it has been rebuilt many times and large parts of the old church were demolished in the 1790’s.

The parish acted as the local government until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when its responsibilities were split between the church congregation and the new civic government of Hölö Municipality. Mörkö Municipality was incorporated in 1952 and the municipality became a part of Södertälje Municipality in 1971 and was moved from Södermanland County to Stockholm County.
