Enköpings-Näs, Uppland – Exploring Sweden

Enköpings-Näs is a small settlement around the old parish church. It lies close to the shores of Lake Mälaren in the historical province of Uppland in eastern Sweden. Lake Mälaren is the third largest lake in Sweden, but the view from the church mostly consists of farmland and forests. This area is today a part of Enköping Municipality in Uppsala County.


A Short History of Enköpings-Näs

Enköpings-Näs Parish had its origins in the Middle Ages and its church is believed to have been inaugurated in the early years of the 13th century. The parish existed until the Swedish municipal reform of 1862. This was when the parish’s operations were split between the new Enköpings-Näs Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality was independent until 1952 when it was incorporated into Åseda Municipality, which in turn became a part of Enköping Municipality in 1971. The church congregation is since 2010 a part of the Tillinge och Södra Åsunda Congregation.


Things to Do and See

Welcome to the countryside just outside of towns such as Enköping and Strängnäs. The surrounding area consists of farmland and forests, but also several small countryside roads that are perfect for hiking or cycling.

Enköpings-Näs Church

Enköpings-Näs Church is a yellow stone church that is believed to have been inaugurated in the early years of the 13th century. The church has seen several alterations and extensions during the centuries since. The church was in 2012 damaged by a fire, but did survive. It is today a part of Tillinge och Södre Åsunda Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.

Runestone U773

Outside of the church is the runestone U773. It is about a meter and a half high and its story is partly lost. The stone does have an impressive serpent.


How to Get to Enköpings-Näs

  • Flights: Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) is 88 kilometers to the east and Stockholm Västerås Airport (VST) is 29 kilometers to the west.
  • Car: Enköpings-Näs is along Road 55 between Enköping and Strängnäs.
  • Bus: Buses from UL connect Enköpings-Näs with the surrounding region.
