Fogdö, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Fogdö is a small settlement, a church, and a former parish in Strängnäs Municipality in Södermanland County. It is on the peninsula of Fogdön in Lake Mälaren, the third-largest lake in Sweden. With its medieval church, this was once one of the central locations on the peninsula.

A Short History of Fogdö

Fogdö Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages and its church dates to the 12th century. The parish had its center in the church and surrounding buildings. The parish was the local government here until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when the parish’s responsibilities were split between the new Fogdö Municipality and the church congregation. The new municipality received the responsibility for all civic matters. It was later in 1952 split between Vårfruberga Municipality and Tosterö Municipality. Both of these are since 1971 a part of Strängnäs Municipality. The church congregation is a part of the Vårfruberga-Härad Congregation since 2006.

Things to Do and See

Watching out over the fields and farmlands is the tower of the medieval church. It stands at the center of these lands as the most prominent feature around here. It is the church that most likely attracts the most visitors to the small settlement, but there are more sights in the vicinity, such as Helgarö Church and the ruins at Kungsberg.

Fogdö Church

Fogdö Church dates back to the 12th century and was for centuries the center of social and religious life in the area. It was at the center of the local parish and later the local congregation. It is, however, since 2006 a part of Vårfruberga-Härad Congregation, which is also within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.
