Fellingsbro Kyrkby, Västmanland – Exploring Sweden

Fellingsbro Kyrkby is a settlement and former seat of the local parish in the historical province of Västmanland. At its center is the parish church that once was a part of the social and religious life of the area’s inhabitants. The area is today a part of Lindesberg Municipality in Örebro County.


A Short History of Fellingsbro Kyrkby

Fellingsbro had its origins in the Middle Ages and its church is believed to originate in the 12th or 13th century. The parish was in operation until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when its operations were split between the local government of the Fellingsbro Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality became a part of Lindesberg Municipality in 1971. Regarding the church congregation, it is still known as Fellingsbro Congregation with the church in Fellingsbro Kyrkby and in Spannarboda.


Things to Do and See

Forests and farmlands surround the small settlement of Fellingsbro Kyrkby so there are some nice views to enjoy. The large buildings, both the church but also the other buildings, make an impression on anyone who drives past them on Road 249.

Fellingsbro Church

Fellingsbro Church is at the center of Fellingsbro Kyrkby and has its origins in the Middle Ages. It is believed to have been built in the 12th or 13th century but has seen major alterations since. One of the additions that have been made includes the church tower which was probably built sometime between the 15th and 17th centuries The church is one of the largest rural churches in Sweden and can seat an audience of 1236 people. It is one of two churches making up Fellingsbro Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.

Kastalen

Kastalen, or the castel, is a tower-like structure next to the church. Its original purpose is today unknown. Some people believe that it has been used as a defensive structure, but it has not been possible to confirm. It has, however, been used both as a storage and as a clocktower in the past.

  • Bus: Local buses from Länstrafiken Örebro connect Fellingsbro Kyrkby with the surrounding region.
