It’s time for one more blog post about Luxembourg. In north-western Luxembourg, we found one of our favorite stops so far. Actually, stop number four on our 13th day of traveling really made our day. Earlier during the day, we had visited Echternach, Vianden, and Diekirch. In fact, it was only the previous day that we had heard about Esch-sur-Sûre and included it in our plans. We arrived there in the late afternoon with the hope to find some small restaurant for a light evening meal before exploring the town itself.
Climbing the Streets of Esch-sur-Sûre
Once more we were lucky to easily find a parking lot. Well, there was one one way street leading around the town and along the road, we found the parking lot. One of the harder ones to miss, for sure.
The most characteristic features of Esch-sur-Sûre are its white buildings and the old castle ruins. The town is located on the banks of the Sûre river and is actually almost encircled by the river. The hills surrounding hills and valleys also create a feeling that you have just entered a fairytale.
Upon arrival, we started to look for a restaurant and to our dismay, we only found two. Both seemed a bit too fancy for a light evening meal, so we decided to keep looking. Before continuing onward in search for food we made sure to explore the town. It really was beautiful and the view from the top of the castle was amazing. We took turns to climb the stairs, in order not to leave Little A alone at the bottom. Standing on top of the old ruins overlooking the valley, that is a view that I will hopefully never forget.
Returning for the Day and Being Redirected to Luxembourg City
Eventually, we decided that dinner could wait until we got back to Metz . It was only a 90 minutes drive back. Or so we thought. It was really a painless journey until we reached the outskirts of Luxembourg City. Here the construction works began and the queues started to form. It took a long time to reach the exit ramp that would take us towards Metz. Once we reached it we saw that it was closed. The road was redirected and here our quest began.
Once we missed the sign about the diversion and had to go back and restart. Finally, we were on our way and we were heading towards Germany instead. Then the next sign told us to turn off at the airport. Following the signs, we eventually ended up in the center of Luxembourg City. It was first at the train station that we were guided back out from the city and towards one of the highways. From this highway, it was then possible to continue south towards France.
Conclusion: Instead of the 5-minutes drive on the ramp, we had a 1-hour drive around Luxembourg City. We started east of the city and finally ended up on the highway west of the city. Just imagine how hungry we were once we got back home!
