Easter is approaching and this year we decided to take a few days off in order to spend some time exploring Finland. After arriving in Turku early this morning, our first stop was Ekenäs. Halfway between Turku and Helsinki, this picturesque small town is located by the sea.
The majority of inhabitants speak Swedish, hence the name Ekenäs. The Finnish name is Tammisaari. The population in the town is around 8,000 and it is a part of the municipality of Raseborg.
A Couple of Hours in Ekenäs
We arrived in Ekenäs at about ten a.m. on a Tuesday, We parked the car in front of the train station and started to explore the town, First, we walked through the city center. There were quite a few interesting-looking shops and some coffee shops. Little A managed to charm a few people on the way. She has a tendency to start squeaking when she sees people. Jesper popped into the tourist office by the square, while I was freezing outside. It was a really cold day and I had not prepared for it properly. With Ekenäs being so close to the sea, the winds were quite chilly as well. There was some buzz in the square as well. Some stands sold textiles, fish, and other things.
The talkative and helpful lady told us about the old town. The old town is approximately between the church and the sea, in Swedish it’s called Barckens udde. Most of the wooden houses here date back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, The oldest buildings stand along the street Linvävaregatan. We had a cozy walk here, admiring the buildings and the old church. However, after a while it started getting really cold, so we had some lunch before heading back to the car.
All in all, I think Ekenäs was worth a visit. There are some interesting places nearby, such as the Fiskars and Billnäs villages, the Raseborg Castle ruins (more about that later, Svartå Manor, as well as the archipelago. However, I think summer is a better time to visit.
