Åkarp, Småland – Exploring Småland

Åkarp is a small settlement in what was once Lönneberga Parish. It is today within Hultsfred Municipality in Kalmar County. In addtion to a few homes, it is also home to Lönneberga Hembygdsgård. This is the local heritage museum, with many historical buildings from the area. It is a way to experience a local farmstead from the past.


A Short History of Åkarp

The local heritage society was established in 1941. The new organization started to collect buildings and objects from the area to preserve its culture and history. They acquired some land close to the settlement of Åkarp and this is where they started to rebuild a farmstead from the past.


Things to Do and See

Åkarp consists of several spread out farmsteads and Lönneberga Hembygdsgård. It is most likely the latter that attracts visitors to the rural area of Småland. But the small countryside roads here do offer some great possibilities for hiking and cycling.

Lönneberga Hembygdsgård

Lönneberga Hembygdsgård is the main attraction and acts like an open-air museum. This is where the midsummer celebrations takes place and there is a café that have open during limited times, especially during the summer. Otherwise it is a great place to walk around and enjoy the historical atmosphere with the many red wooden buildings that has been moved here from the surrounding area.

  • Flights: The nearest airport is Småland Airport (VXO) in Växjö, which is 114 kilometers to the southwest.
  • Car: Åkarp is on countryside roads east of Hultsfred.
