A Short History of Lönneberga Kyrka

Lönneberga Parish had its origins in the Middle Ages and it covered an area that today houses both Lönneberga as well as the locality of Silverdalen. The parish church is believed to initially have been a wooden church that was built some time during the Middle Ages. That was just the first of many churches that has served the parish. The medieval church was replaced at the end of the 16th century by another wooden church that burned down in 1612 during the war with Denmark. It was replaced by a church that survived up until the 1870’s. It was in the 1870’s that the current white stone church was built.

The parish acted as the local government until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when its responsibilities were split between the church congregation and the new civic government of Lönneberga Municipality. The municipality was in 1969 incorporated into the market town of Hultsfred, which became Hultsfred Municipality in 1971. Lönneberga Kyrka is still part of Lönneberga Congregation.
