Warsaw, Poland | A Multi-City Adventure

My first visit to Poland in 2025 marked a return to a familiar and valued travel base: Warsaw. Throughout the previous year, this city served as a fantastic hub for my European travels, acting as a launchpad for flights to places as far as Bergamo and Rome, as well as for train journeys within Poland itself. After seeing Warsaw many times, it was great to return with a specific plan focused on exploring more of the country. This trip was dedicated to discovering three new cities—Łódź, Białystok, and Żyrardów—using the capital as a comfortable starting point for a multi-city adventure.

The goal was to experience a wider slice of Poland by venturing out on three consecutive day trips. I was excited to see the contrast between the bustling capital and the industrial heritage of Łódź, the green spaces of Białystok, and the historical streets of Żyrardów. While Warsaw is a fascinating destination in its own right, the real magic often lies in the less-visited cities that are just a short train ride away. It was a packed itinerary, but one that promised a rich and varied travel experience.

Returning for a New Adventure in Poland

My new adventure in Poland began with an early morning WizzAir flight from Stockholm Skavsta Airport (NYO) to Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW). It felt great to be back with a clear mission. My previous day trips from Warsaw had already taken me to cities like Radom and Lublin, which only increased my desire to see more. This time, I was determined to venture beyond the familiar and delve deeper into the region surrounding the capital, with three destinations that were completely new to me.

This adventure was focused on seeing a different side of Poland. Each of the three planned day trips was to a city with its own unique identity and story. I looked forward to the train journeys themselves, the long walks of exploration in each new place, and the chance to experience the local culture. Returning to the comfort of Warsaw each evening made it the perfect way to travel, combining the excitement of new discoveries with the ease of a familiar base.

A Sunny Day in Warsaw

The weather was on my side upon my arrival in the Polish capital, greeting me with a beautiful sunny day. After settling into my accommodation, I headed out for a long walk to reacquaint myself with the city. My route took me through the central Śródmieście district, a vibrant area filled with shops, restaurants, and impressive buildings. It is always a pleasure to walk these wide avenues and feel the pulse of the city.

The highlight of my walk was, as always, a stroll through Warsaw’s beautifully reconstructed Old Town. It is a place that never fails to impress, with its colorful facades, cobblestone streets, and lively market square. Walking there on a sunny day felt particularly special, with the light catching the historic buildings perfectly. It was a wonderful way to spend my first day, simply soaking in the atmosphere of the city before the busy days of travel that lay ahead of me.

Day Trip to Łódź

My first day trip took me to Łódź, a city known for its rich industrial heritage. I took an early morning train from Warsaw’s central station and arrived at the modern Łódź Fabryczna station. From there, I set out on foot to explore the central parts of the city. My main destination was the famous Piotrkowska Street, one of the longest commercial streets in Europe. It was an incredible experience to walk along this vibrant pedestrian street, admiring the grand 19th-century architecture and the many unique statues and installations along the way.

My walk didn’t stop there; I also made a detour to the historic Księży Młyn district. This area is a fascinating complex of former textile mills, workers’ houses, and grand factory owner residences, offering a glimpse into the city’s past as a textile manufacturing powerhouse. The contrast between the bustling main street and the quiet, historic industrial district was striking. After a full day of exploring, I headed back to the train station for the return journey to Warsaw, filled with impressions of this unique and resilient city.

Day Trip to Białystok

The next day, I was on another early morning train, this time heading east to Białystok. Upon arrival, I began my walk into the city center. My first impressions were of a very green and pleasant city. I found a nice place for lunch on the main street before continuing my exploration. The city’s main sights were easy to find, and I spent time admiring the beautiful cathedral and the impressive Branicki Palace, often called the “Versailles of Podlasie” for its stunning architecture and gardens.

The main reason for my visit to Białystok was to see the animal that the region is famous for: the European bison. My walk took me to the Akcent ZOO, a small city zoo that is home to several of these magnificent creatures. Seeing them up close was a fantastic experience and a real highlight of the day. After spending some time at the zoo, I made my way back to the train station for the afternoon train back to Warsaw, happy to have experienced this green city in the east.

Day Trip to Żyrardów

For my final day trip, I chose the smaller town of Żyrardów, which was a much shorter train ride from Warsaw. I took a slightly later train, giving me a more relaxed start to the day. My goal was simple: to walk along the streets and get a feel for this historic industrial town. Żyrardów is known for its well-preserved 19th-century factory settlement, a unique example of urban planning from the era of the linen industry.

My walk took me on a loop through the town’s grid-like streets, past the old factory buildings, workers’ houses, and public buildings, all constructed from the same distinctive red brick. For a snack, I just stopped at a local grocery store for something simple. After spending a couple of hours exploring the town’s unique atmosphere, I took the train back to Warsaw. It was a short but fascinating visit that offered a different perspective on Poland’s industrial history.

Good Bye, Poland!

After three consecutive days of travel and exploration, my multi-city adventure in Poland had come to an end. This trip was a fantastic experience, allowing me to see four very different Polish cities in just a few days. Each one offered a unique glimpse into the country’s diverse history, culture, and landscape. From the bustling streets of Warsaw to the industrial charm of Łódź and Żyrardów, and the green beauty of Białystok, it was a journey filled with memorable moments.

As I prepared for my flight home, I knew this would not be my last visit. This trip was just the first of what I hope will be several visits to Poland in 2025. There is still so much more to see and explore in this fascinating country. Warsaw has proven to be the perfect base for such adventures, and I am already looking forward to my next return.
