Odensbacken, Närke – Exploring Sweden

Odensbacken is a small locality in Örebro Municipality in Örebro County, in what was once the province of Närke. It is named after Odin, the Norse God, and is today mostly a residential area with a few ancient remains. It is today home to around 1300 inhabitants.


A Short History of Odensbacken

Odensbacken was once a part of Asker Parish and was known already in the 18th century. The mystery has, however, remained regarding if the name was established first in the 18th century or if it is much older than that. The population here was less than 400 in 1960 and continued to increase until the end of the century. Since then it has somewhat stabilized a bit over 1300.


Things to Do and See

Driving into Odensbacken will take you to a roundabout that in its center has a miniature mill welcoming visitors to Odensbacken. It is also in this area that you find the local shopping center with a grocery store and a pharmacy. The main street through the locality does offer a few services, but you will soon find yourself in mostly residential areas. That is with the exception of the large grain silo that is still in use.

The ancient grave field of Odensbacken includes several sights of interest. There is a total of 45 ancient remains here, mixed between burial mounds, stone circles, and even a stone ship. They are all visible in an area close to the main road.

  • Flights: Örebro Airport (ORB) is 41 kilometers to the northwest.
  • Car: Odensbacken is along Road 52 between Kumla and Vingåker.
  • Bus: Local buses from Länstrafiken Örebro connect Odensbacken with the surrounding region.
  • Train: The closest train stations are in Hallsberg, Kumla, and Örebro.
