Öster Malma, Södermanland, Exploring Sweden

Öster Malma, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Öster Malma, or Östermalma, is a castle-like manor in Nyköpings Municipality in Södermanland County. The manor and castle grounds are today home to the Swedish Association for Hunting who use it as a seat as well as a conference and event center. Parts of the grounds also house the association’s own wildlife park. In fact, it is a mini zoo with Nordic animals such as elk and red deer.

A Short History of Öster Malma

Öster Malma has its origins in a small settlement that in the 1650s began its development into a seat farm. The manor house was built in the 1660s under the ownership of Wilhelm Drakenhjelm. These lands were at the time a part of Ludgo Parish and the church was a few kilometers away.

The Swedish Association for Hunting is since 1946 housed here. This became possible after the Swedish state acquired Öster Malma in 1944. The association purchased the estate from the state in 1994. They renovated the old barn in 2003 and it is today using it for offices, conferences, and education.

Things to Do and See

The castle grounds and the wildlife park are, without a doubt, the main attractions here. The area also includes ancient remains such as a hillfort and burial field. This is all in an area surrounded by fields and forests. The hiking opportunities in the area are plentiful and with a bike there are plenty of countryside roads to explore.

Öster Malma Castle

Öster Malma Castle, well the manor house, is a white house with two separated yellow wings that frame the front of the castle. It watches out over Lake Malmasjön and is surrounded by a park landscape. It is used for public and private events with the interior offering an historical feeling.

Öster Malma Wildlife Park

The wildlife park is a way for everyone to get the opportunity to experience Swedish wildlife. Here you are able to see animals such as the elk (also known as moose), the red deer, and the mouflon. These are all animals that are commonly hunted in Sweden, but also animals that normal people may encounter in nature.
