Hunga, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Along a small countryside road between Trosa and Vagnhärad is the small settlement of Hunga. The settlement is in an idyllic rural setting with green fields, small forests, and limited passing traffic. Year-round residents share this area with the temporary summer visitors who have found their summer cottages in the area. In total, there are around 60 adult residents who have Hunga as their main home.

A Short History of Hunga

Hunga has for centuries been home to a farming community. Previously Hunga was a district within the rural parish of Trosa, the rural area near the town of Trosa. Farms here included Överhunga and Ytterhunga, and also smaller crofts such as Jordbrostugan and Fänstorpet.

Things to Do and See

This is not a place that you visit to see a specific sight. Instead, it is the rural setting that is the attraction. The small road is popular for recreational activities with people running and cycling between Trosa and Vagnhärad. Enjoying nature is the main advice. Hunga is also one of the stages of Sörmlandsleden, a network of hiking trails through the province of Södermanland. It is the stage between Sillekrog and Hungastogen that passes through here. It is a total distance of 16 kilometers.

  • Flights: Two nearby airports are Stockholm Skavsta Airport (NYO) 49 kilometers to the southwest and Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) 109 kilometers to the north.
  • Car: Hunga is located along a countryside road between Vagnhärad and Trosa.
  • Bus: Local buses from Sörmlandstrafiken stop in both Vagnhärad and Trosa.
  • Train: The closest train station is in Vagnhärad, with trains to Norrköping, Nyköping, Södertälje, and Stockholm.
