Häverö, Uppland – Exploring Sweden

Häverö is a village in the historical province of Uppland in the coastal lands of Roslagen. Much of the settlement is to the east of the old parish church. This area and its around 60 inhabitants is today a part of Norrtälje Municipality in Stockholm County. This is a rural part of Uppland with forests and farmlands. It is, however, in the vicinity of the localities of Hallstavik and Häverödal.

A Short History of Häverö

Häverö Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages and the parish church is believed to have been built prior to the 14th century. The parish covered an area that today includes the localities of Hallstavik, Häverödal, and Herräng. Due to the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862, the operations of the parish split between the local government of Häverö Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality became a part of Norrtälje Municipality in 1971 and the church congregation is since 2010 a part of the Häverö-Edebo Congregation.

Things to Do and See

It is hard to tell if it is the church or the church’s clock tower that is the most prominent construction in the area. Farmlands and forests surround Häverö, but it is not far to the coast and the Baltic Sea.

Häverö Church

The age of the granite stone church is unknown, but it is believed to have been built prior to the 14th century and replaced a former wooden church. Many alterations and additions has been done to the church since its construction, with the oldest parts being the nave and vestry. The church has an external red wooden clock tower that is believed to date back to the 16th century, making it one of the oldest in Uppland. The church is a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.
