Bessešjohka, Lappland – Exploring Sweden

Bessešjohka is a river as well as a rest area along Road E10 in the far north of Sweden. This is the province of Lappland in what is today Kiruna Municipality in Norrbotten County. The rest area is right next to where the river flows into Lake Torneträsk, the sixth-largest lake in Sweden. The river has its origins in Lake Pessisjaure, where water needs to flow 456 kilometers before reaching the Baltic Sea.

There are many names for Bessešjohka, it is also known as Pessisjåkka, Pessinåjokk, and Bessijåkka,


Things to Do and See

Bessešjohka is a nature area that offers some great views. The lake and the river are a nice combination when enjoying a rest from a long drive, or when you just want to have some peace and quiet. The tranquility here is quite amazing, even with the main road so close by.

The river itself is the main attraction here. Its rapids are fierce and might by some be called a waterfall. It is possible to enjoy the view of the river and where it flows into Lake Torneträsk from the rest area along Road E10.

Lake Torneträsk

From the rest area, it is possible to walk down to the shores of Lake Torneträsk. The lake is popular among locals who during the winter head here for recreational fishing. They travel out on the ice with their snow scooters and some bring with them small cabins. For summer visitors a swim in the lake might be tempting during the summer months. But do keep in mind that the temperature usually doesn’t get above 9 degrees Celcius.

  • Flights: The closest airport is Kiruna Airport (KRN) which is 82 kilometers to the southeast.
  • Car: Kaisepakte is along Road E10 north of Kiruna.
