Tystbergaby, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Tystbergaby is a small settlement around the church of Tystberga Parish. The village and its church are in eastern Sweden, in what is today Nyköping Municipality in Södermanland County. Tystbergaby with its church is on the northeastern outskirts of the locality of Tystberga. The area consists of its medieval church and a farmstead that might have an even longer history to tell.

A Short History of Tystbergaby

Tystberga Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages and the parish church dates back to the 12th century. The parish and its church in Tystbergaby were for centuries at the center of social and religious life for the inhabitants of the area. Its responsibilities lasted until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when the responsibilities were split between the local government of Tystberga Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality became in 1971 a part of Nyköping Municipality. The church congregation is since 2002 a part of the Tystbergabygden Congregation.

In addition to the small settlement in Tystbergaby, just around the church, there is today a locality established around what was once the local railway station. Its development began with the railway opening in 1913. The trains do, however, not stop here since 1972.

Things to Do and See

Standing on a hill surrounded by farmland the parish church is easily spotted and ir offers that classical view that at least some associate with the Swedish countryside. The small locality of Tystberga is nearby and there are plenty of small countryside roads to explore either while on a hike or when sitting on a bike.

Tystberga Church

Tystberga Church was inaugurated in the 12th century and its tower was built in the 15th century. It is a yellow stone church that in many ways shares its appearance with other churches in the area such as the one in Vagnhärad. The church is today one of the churches making up Tystbergabygden Congregation within the Evangelical Church of Sweden.
