Weekly Travel theme: Decadent

Decadence and decadent are two of my favorite words in the English language. They hold a promise of adventure, secrecy, recklessness, and of course a small dose of luxury. I think that being able to travel as much as we do add some decadence to our lives.

Here’s a more precise definition of the word, from Merriam-Webster:

  1. :  marked by decay or decline an increasingly decadent society

  2. literature :  of, relating to, or having the characteristics of a group of late 19th century French and English writers tending toward artificial and unconventional subjects and subtilized style :  of, relating to, or having the characteristics of the decadents

  3. :  characterized by or appealing to self-indulgence a rich and decadent dessert the hotel’s decadent luxury

Decadent is also this week’s theme on wheresmybackpack.com and here’s my contribution to the weekly challenge.

Decadent Snapshots from Around the World

The splendid colors of Istanbul are mysterious, yet appealing. Just like the city itself!

Moonlight and artificial lights in Skopje, Macedonia. It is a grandiose city, where the surface hides reality.

Bratislava in December. A walk in cobblestoned alleys, in the dark. You never know what secrets and opportunities hide behind the corner.

Sunsets – just like this one on Åland – hold the promise of a bright new day. A day filled with joy, play, and laughter.

Can there ever be enough books? This bookstore in Buenos Aires was a real treat!

Books, Skopje, Macedonia

If the books in Buenos Aires are not enough, then there are more of them in Skopje.

All cheese lovers of the world unite! Also, take the chance and try this Slovak delicacy – nakladany encian. Also known as pickled cheese in English.

Bohemic and laissez-faire, Užupis in Vilnius is surely the place for some good old decadence.

More cheese. Just because I can and because it tastes so lovely. This is a Macedonian dish called shopska. It has cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, peppers and white cheese.

Living la vida loca en la Boca. A tourist trap where you can also bump into the darker shades of society.

Tallinn is a town of pleasures. Tasty food, lively bars. Museums, parks, beaches. Really, here you have the chance to enjoy all good things in life.

Brussels, Belgium

This turtle in Brussels surely knew how to enjoy the sunshine – and life as well!

In order to really indulge in decadence, one must be healthy. This blueberry matcha power breakfast will keep you going.

Georgia and Tbilisi Tbilisi, Georgia

Traditional food, wine, amazing nature, and hundreds of years of history. Georgia (the country) is definitely the place to go!

Gränna, Sweden

Sugar might be the epitome of decadence. In Gränna, Sweden, they know all about sugar. This typically Swedish stick candy is very colorful and called polkagris and it was invented in Gränna.

Vadstena, Sweden Spaghetti aglio e olio

Luxurious can sometimes be very simple. Like this spaghetti aglio e olio. Add some ice cream for dessert and you have all that you need for a perfect meal.

Take me to Lake Como. This is the home of luxury and self-indulgence. And the towns around the lake are so incredibly cozy. The ice cream was good, too!

What is decadent to you?
