Paktajaure, Lappland – Exploring Sweden

Paktajaure is a lake in the province of Lappland in the far north of Sweden, close to the border with Norway. The area is a part of Kiruna Municipality in Norrbotten County. The lake has its outflow in the river Paktajåkka, which in turn ends up in the sixth largest lake in Sweden, Lake Torneträsk. Road E10 between Kiruna and Narvik passes by the lake and has an unofficial rest area right at the shores of Paktajaure.


Things to Do and See

The lake is just a small part of the huge nature area that is northern Sweden. There are many hiking trails leading along rivers and lakes and up and down the many mountains. The main challenge is usually to find the hiking trail and information about possible routes. Stopping at local tourist information offices, eg. in Abisko or Kiruna might be a good start to make sure that you find the tail that you want.

Lake Paktajaure

Lake Paktajaure is what attracts many to stop by the small rest area on its shores. The calm waters surrounded by mountains create a picturesque view. Many motor homes stop here for the night and others take the possibility of just sitting down and enjoying the view.

  • Flights: The closest airport is Kiruna Airport (KRN) 116 kilometers to the southeast.
  • Car: Paktajaure is along Road E10 north of Kiruna.
