Hallstavik, Uppland – Exploring Sweden

Hallstavik is a locality in the historical province of Uppland in eastern Sweden. It lies within the coastal area known as Roslagen, at a narrow bay that connects it with the Baltic Sea. In addition to the around 4.700 inhabitants and the Speedway club Rospiggarna, Hallstavik is also home to one of the larger paper mills in Sweden, the Hallsta Pappersbruk. This area was earlier part of Häverö Parish, but the locality is today a part of Norrtälje Municipality in Stockholm County.

A Short History of Hallstavik

Until the early years of the 20th century, this was a small settlement known as Hallsta. This changed in 1915 with the establishment of a paper mill on the outskirts of the settlement. Hallsta Pappersbruk was founded by Holmens Bruk AB which also had a paper mill in Norrköping. The paper mill still plays an important role in Hallstavik.

There is also a 25-meter-long swimming pool with four lanes. And no swimming center in Sweden is complete without a sauna, or bastu as we call it.

The local church is right next to the industrial area of the paper mill. It is a red brick church that was inaugurated in 1933. The external clock tower has a clock that was made out of old machine parts from the factory. The church is today a part of Häverö-Edebo Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.

Speedway & Rospiggarna

At Credentia Arena you will find the motorcycles racing around the track. This is the home of the speedway club Rospiggarna, a team that has become Swedish champions five times. The club won its first gold in 1995, an accomplishment that they repeated in 1997, 2001, 2002, and 2016.
