A Short History of Glömminge

Glömminge Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages. In fact, the parish church has a history going back all the way to the 12th century. The parish church was for centuries the seat of the parish as well as the center of the social and religious life in its vicinity. The parish acted as the local government and did so up until the Swedish Municipal Reform of 1862. This was when its responsibilities were split between the church congregation and the new civic government of Glömminge Municipality. The municipality was in 1952 incorporated into Torslunda Municipality, which in turn became a part of Mörbylånga Municipality in 1974. The church congregation is since 2017 a part of the Glömminge-Algutsrum Congregation.

Glömminge was up until 2015 classified as a small village by Statistics Sweden, that changed that year when it had grown and merged with Strandskogen to create a new locality. The new locality has since more than doubled its population.
