Gdańsk, Poland, A Repeat Summer Visit

Gdańsk, Poland – A Repeat Summer Visit

I have taken the opportunity this summer to go abroad for some day trips. Well, from where we live I have only identified one destination that is reachable for a day trip and that is Gdańsk in northern Poland. The Wizz Air flight from Stockholm Skavsta Airport leaves in the morning and returns in the evening. My visit in August was my third in 2023. It was only my visit to a snowy city in February that included an overnight stay.

Earlier visits:

It was a Saturday morning in August when I drove to Stockholm Skavsta Airport just outside of Nyköping. Less than 30 minutes from our home this is an easy airport to depart from for all of us that live south of Stockholm. It was a cloudy morning, but I was soon onboard the Airbus A321 heading to Gdańsk.

A Day Exploring Gdańsk

I had planned on hiking from Gdynia to Gdansk during the day. Unfortunately, the first thing I received upon arrival was a text message with an official storm warning. The weather was nice and the rain was according to the forecasts not expected until the evening. But I was still a bit cautious so I decided against the long hike and did instead head to Gdańsk to explore more of the urban area.

I took a taxi from the airport to the shopping center Forum Gdansk. From there I set out on foot, walking mostly straight through the old town to reach the city’s canals. I had decided to follow the canals north towards the sea to see what I could find. The center was crowded with tourists but once I left the Old Town the number of fellow people around dropped sharply. I walked through an old industrial area of Stocznia Gdańska, the shipyard, where I did eventually turn around.

On my way back towards the center I came across a number of American police cars. It was interesting to see as they really looked out of place here in Europe. If anyone knows what they did in Gdańsk, please let me know.

The rest of the day was spent strolling along the beautiful streets of the Old Town. Sometimes it is just nice to be somewhere else than home, that feeling of being abroad.

Flying Back Home

After spending a whole day on my feet I was eventually feeling like it was time to give them a rest. That meant that I took a taxi back to the airport to sit down for dinner before my flight back home. With just a slight delay I was soon back in the air on my way home.
