Väddö Kyrka, Uppland | Exploring Sweden

Väddö Church is a historic church located on Väddö island in the Roslagen region of Uppland. The island is part of Norrtälje Municipality and the Stockholm archipelago. The island itself has a permanent population of around 3,000 residents, which increases significantly in the summer. Its geography is characterized by its long, narrow shape. It is bordered by the Baltic Sea to the east and the Väddö Canal to the west. Nearby towns include the municipal center of Norrtälje, about 30 kilometers away.

The church stands as the central point of the Väddö parish. The area’s character is defined by its rural setting and its coastal proximity. The church serves as a key historical and architectural landmark for the island community. It reflects several centuries of local history, from the medieval period to its 19th-century reconstruction. The building and its surroundings offer insight into the religious and social life of the Roslagen archipelago.

A Short History of Väddö Kyrka

The history of Väddö Church involves the replacement of a medieval structure, a complete 19th-century rebuilding, and a subsequent fire and restoration. This evolution reflects the changing needs and circumstances of the parish over several centuries.

The Medieval Origins

The history of a church on Väddö dates back to the medieval period. An older stone church, built in a style typical of Uppland churches from the 1300s, originally stood just west of the current site. For centuries, this building served as the spiritual and communal hub for the island’s population of farmers and fishermen. It was the central point of the Väddö parish. This original medieval church was eventually deemed too small or outdated for the growing parish.

Demolition and Reconstruction

In the early 19th century, a decision was made to build a larger, more modern church. The medieval church was demolished between 1840 and 1842. During the same period, the present Väddö Church was constructed on a new site nearby. The new building was designed with an unusual north-south orientation, which is a departure from the traditional east-west alignment of most churches. This reconstruction represented a complete modernization of the parish’s central building.

Fire and Later Additions

In 1872, just a few decades after it was completed, a fire caused damage to the newly constructed church. However, it was swiftly rebuilt and restored, maintaining its architectural character. This event is another key moment in the building’s history. Over the following decades, notable interior features from the older church and new additions were incorporated. The church today stands as a testament to the parish’s long history and its ability to overcome adversity.

Things to Do and See

The main point of interest is the Väddö Church (Väddö kyrka) itself. The neoclassical stone church was constructed between 1840 and 1842. The structure includes an attached tower at its northern end, built at the same time as the rest of the building. The interior contains numerous historically significant objects that were preserved from the older medieval church. Among the oldest items are a 13th-century baptismal font carved from Gotland limestone and several medieval wooden sculptures, including a depiction of St. Olaf. Key Baroque furnishings include the large altarpiece and pulpit, both from the 17th century.
