Tureholm, Södermanland | Exploring Sweden
Tureholm is a castle just to the west of Trosa along the Baltic Sea coast of the province of Södermanland in eastern Sweden. This is an 18th-century castle that is today privately owned. Its history is, however, much longer. It stretches back to at least the 14th century when it had the name Gäddeholm. This is one of three castles in the area. To the north, you will also find the royal Tullgarn Castle, while to the south there is Nynäs Castle.
We are unsure if there are any guided tours in the castle. It is, however, possible to explore parts of the castle grounds. You will, however, not find any tourist amenities here, but you will find a historical atmosphere.
A Short History of Tureholm
The earliest known castle here was known by the name Gäddeholm and during the first half of the 15th century, the owner was the nobleman Nils Gädda. The Gädda family would keep Gäddeholm for several generations while they married with other influential families. By marriage and ancestry, Gäddeholm came in the possession of Sten Sture the Younger. A few Sture generations later Sten Sture’s granddaughter Sigrid Sture, married Ture Pedersson Bielke in 1562. The Bielke Family would keep Gäddeholm in their possession for many generations until the 20th century.
Something did, however, happen in 1719. The Russians burnt down the Gäddeholm Castle was burnt down during the Russian Pillage. This was just one of many estates, castles, and also towns that were burned down along the coast. The entire town of Trosa shared the same fate, and so did towns such as Umeå, Sundsvall, and Piteå as well as many more in the following years.
The work to rebuild the castle did not start until 1728 by Thure Gabriel Bielke. It was he who changed the name to Tureholm. The Bielke family sold the castle to Herman Gullberg in 1921. Already in 1935, the castle was acquired by the Bonde Family. The castle became a listed building in 1987.
Things to Do and See
Visiting the castle itself might not be possible, but seeing the castle grounds and feeling the historical atmosphere is in itself an attraction. The surrounding countryside, with the Baltic Sea nearby, makes it an easy and nice excursion from Trosa, a town that is just about 2 kilometers away.

- Flights: Two nearby airports are Stockholm Skavsta Airport (NYO) 47 kilometers to the southwest and Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) 114 kilometers to the north.
- Car: Tureholm is located along countryside roads just to the west of Trosa.
- Bus: Local buses from Sörmlandstrafiken traffic a short distance to the north, along the main road.
- Train: The closest train station is in Vagnhärad, with trains to Norrköping, Nyköping, Södertälje, and Stockholm.
