Emmaboda, Småland – Exploring Sweden

Emmaboda is a locality and the seat of the local municipality in Kalmar County. This is a part of the historical province of Småland in southeastern Sweden. This is a former railway settlement that has developed and has today a population of around 5,000 inhabitants, a little bit more than half of everyone living in the municipality.

A Short History of Emmaboda

Emmaboda was for centuries only a small settlement within Vissefjärda Parish. That began to change in 1874 when the railway to Kalmar was completed with a station on land belonging to the settlement of Gantesbo. The locality became a railway junction within a year when the railway line between Karlskrona and Växjö was completed and joined the line to Kalmar. The railway station received its name from the settlement of Emmaboda.

The locality has since grown and does today not only include the two former settlements of Emmaboda and Gantesbo. It now also includes the former station settlement of Lindås as well as the neighborhoods of Grimmansmåla, Kimramåla, Linneryd, Rasslebygd, and Tommaboda.
