Tillberga, Västmanland – Exploring Sweden

Tillberga is a locality in Västerås Municipality in Västmanland County. This is a community of around 2.200 inhabitants that has developed in the vicinity of the railway. This locality just north of the city of Västerås was for a long time a railway junction between several large railway lines.

A Short History of Tillberga

The train station here opened in 1875. The station was named after the nearby church in Tillberga Parish, it is however located in Hubbo Parish. A settlement grew around the new station and the station gained a new connection, becoming a railway junction. Trains from Stockholm passed through here along the route to Västerås and Örebro. There were also trains coming from Sala connecting to the other line in Tillberga. The railway line between Stockholm and Örebro has been rebuilt since and is no longer passing by Tillberga and trains along other routes no longer stop here.

A prison opened in 1863. It is a low-security prison that today has space to incarcerate 233 people.

Things to Do and See

As long as it is not the prison that you are visiting exploring Tillberga is quite easy. There is a small center where there are a few local restaurants and services. Not far away is also the local school. Otherwise, this is mostly a residential area with a few industries along the railway.

The surrounding area consists mostly of farmland and a few small forests. Along the fields, there are the two churches of Hubbo and Tillberga. It is also not far from the city of Västerås.

• Car: Tillberga is on Road 56 north of Västerås.
• Bus: Local and regional buses from VL connect Tillberga with the surrounding region.
