Rö, Uppland – Exploring Sweden

Rö is a small settlement in the historical province of Uppland in eastern Sweden. This is a settlement with the church at its center that has a history going back to the Middle Ages. The area is today a part of Norrtälje Municipality within Stockholm County.


A Short History of Rö

Rö Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages and its church is believed to have been built in the 13th century. The parish was the center of life here up until the Swedish municipal reform of 1862. This was when the parish’s operations were split between the local government of Rö Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality became in 1952 a part of Sjuhundra Municipality which in turn was incorporated into Rimbo Municipality in 1967. The last change was in 1971 when Rimbo Municipality became a part of Norrtälje Municipality. In regards to the church congregation it is since 2008 a part of Husby, Skederid och Rö Congregation.


Things to Do and See

The settlement and church are located in the countryside of Stockholm County with close access to farmland, forests, and lakes. The Baltic Sea is also not far away. For example, the small Lake Rösjön is located right next door.

Rö Church

The parish church is believed to date back to the 13th century. There have, of course, been several alterations during the centuries since. The church is today a part of Husby, Skederid och Rö Congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden.

  • Flights: Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) can be found 38 to the west.
  • Car: Rö is located along countryside roads between Norrtälje and Stockholm.
  • Bus: Buses from SL connect Rö with the surrounding region.
