Råby-Rönö, Södermanland – Exploring Sweden

Råby-Rönö is a settlement that has grown around the local parish church. It is a short distance north of the town of Nyköping, in the historical province of Södermanland in the eastern part of Sweden. Today this small settlement has around 60 inhabitants.

A Short History of Råby-Rönö

Råby-Rönö Parish has its origins in the Middle Ages and the church was inaugurated in the 13th century. During the municipal reforms of 1862, the parish was split between the local government of Råby-Rönö Municipality and the church congregation. The municipality survived until 1952 when it became a part of Rönö Municipality. This lasted until 1971 when Rönö Municipality was incorporated into Nyköping Municipality. There are many twists and turns here, so how about the congregation? It survived until 1995 when it was merged into Råby-Ripsa Congregation, which in 2002 was incorporated into Rönö Congregation.

Things to Do and See

Råby-Rönö is in many ways limited to one attraction and that is the local church. This probably results in that many visitors are here to mainly attend events such as baptisms, weddings, or funerals. Maybe they are visiting the graveyard. For the rest of us, this might be a stop for our heritage research or just a way to enjoy the Swedish countryside.
