Gräddö, Uppland – Exploring Sweden

Gräddö is the main settlement on the peninsula of Rådmansö in Norrtälje Municipality. This is today a part of Stockholm County, but this coastal area was once best known as the region Roslagen within the historical province of Uppland. Together with the nearby settlements of Nabbo and Rävsnäs, a locality is defined by Statistics Sweden and it has today a population of around 580 inhabitants.

A Short History of Gräddö

Gräddö is mentioned in historical documents dating back as far as 1547. The area has a long maritime history and the Swedish Navy has many times been used as an embarkation point. It eventually turned into a tourist resort with a maritime industry. A shipyard was established in 1924 and it was active until the 1960s. It was also from here that Viking Line began its traffic between Sweden and the Åland Islands in 1959 before it was moved to nearby Kapellskär a year later.

It would take until 2015 before Gräddö had expanded enough together with the settlements of Nabbo and Rävsnäs to be able to be classified as a locality by Statistics Sweden.

Things to Do and See

The center of Gräddö lies in a small bay with the local marina. Here you will find a small grocery store, cafés, and other services. The local wharf also acts as one of the gateways to the nearby archipelago and the Baltic Sea for those who do not have their own boats in the marina.

Gräddö Marina

The marina is the main gateway to the Baltic Sea for the ones that have a boat. It is the former shipyard that today offers service and berth for leisure boats.
